Lockdown Tips: How a Facebook Friends List Can be Your Best Friend Now!
Facebook has a cool function that lets you organize people into groups and produce custom news feeds for groups. It’s called The Friends List and it sits under the Explore tab on the left of your news feed. This tool lets you create unique lists of people and businesses you are connected to on Facebook. It helps you organize and target your messages and lets you group businesses and pages that you keep an eye on.
Here are the two ways to use it:
1. Organize your close friends (they see everything you post), acquaintances (people you might want to share less of or target your posts) and anyone you might want to restrict (you've added them as friends but you don't want to share posts with them, I.e. your boss).
The secret is in the acquaintance list. Remember, you need to be friends with someone to add them to a list. And, no they won't be notified when you add or remove them. You can put all of your sphere of influence into the acquaintance list. Once you add them, you'll be able to target posts just for them.
What does that mean? By putting them in your acquaintances, you've created a special area where you can post specifically for them. The other side of the coin is when you post something that may not be appropriate for your SOI to see, you can choose to have that post only read by your close friends in the audience selector.
For the lockdown period, post reassuring and positive messages, along with factual information about the market. Everyone’s worried about their home value right now, give them facts based on your local knowledge and history of the market. Beyond that, the sky is the limit: market reports and updates, new listings, new sales, etc.
2. Create an industry watch list such as real estate. If you're following people and pages because they are relevant to your industry and provide insight, you can create a list called Real Estate Insiders, for example. You don't have to wait for a post to show up in your feed or miss another post. You just click on the list and you'll see all the activity for the last 24 hours.
Real estate-related – Create a flow of information from real estate influencers, publications, state and local associations, or any others you think might have timely information for sharing.
Local Associations – It’s not just people that can be added, you can put business pages on a list, like your downtown association, the chamber of commerce and other city-related pages or businesses to stay up to date on all activities.
You can create custom lists to organize as many groups as you like. You choose who goes into each list and what (if any) privacy restrictions apply.
PRO TIP: The more you interact (posts, comments, shares) with your custom groups, the more Facebook will show your posts in their overall newsfeed. That's a good thing!
To create a new list:
- From your News Feed, go to the Explore section on the left and click Friend Lists. If you don't see it, click See More... then scroll to find it.
- Click + Create List.
- Enter a name for your list and the names of friends you’d like to add. Keep in mind you can add or remove friends from your lists at any time.
- Click Create.
Take some time and do this while you have the time. You’ll get to connect to people and businesses during this confinement and you’ll have the lists ready to go when the storm passes.
